Dehorning is something none of us ever want to have to do.
For us, every rhino is an individual we know and care about, which is why making the decision to dehorn them is never an easy one. But when it can give our rhino a better chance of surviving the ongoing threat of poaching, we will do everything in our power to keep them safe.
Recently, our team carried out an important dehorning and monitoring operation at Insimbi. Over the course of two days, our rhino were safely darted, dehorned and fitted with new AI collars.
While dehorning is not something anyone wants for these magnificent animals, it is currently one of the tools available to us to help reduce their vulnerability to poaching. The new AI collars will also give our team valuable additional tools to monitor the rhino and respond quickly if there are any concerns.

We are incredibly grateful to have organisations like STS and VCC standing alongside us in the fight to protect rhino. Conservation is not something any one organisation can do alone. It takes collaboration, expertise, funding and people who are willing to stand up for wildlife.
More Than Just Two Days
What you see on social media is only a small glimpse into what happens during an operation like this.
Behind every successful dehorning is careful planning, experienced veterinary teams, dedicated conservationists and people working together to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the animals throughout the process.
There are also the hours of monitoring and preparation that happen before and after the operation — because protecting our rhino doesn’t stop once they wake up.
