Protecting rhinos in the wild requires more than just presence — it demands skill, precision, and constant learning. That’s why ongoing training remains a core part of how we equip our Anti-Poaching Unit (APU) to do what they do best.
Recently, our anti-poaching rangers took part in a telemetry refresher session, while some of our newer team members were introduced to the fundamentals of tracking rhinos using telemetry for the very first time.
The training was led by Michelle (@shellbyville13), whose ability to follow a rhino’s movements — even through dense, unforgiving bush — is nothing short of remarkable. Under her guidance, the team put their skills into practice with a 3.2km tracking exercise in search of one of our rhinos, Jack.
The track was a success, with the team locating him after carefully following telemetry signals and reading the environment along the way. Exercises like this are not only practical, but vital — building confidence and sharpening the instincts needed in real-world situations.
Blending Technology with Field Expertise
At Insimbi, we rely on a combination of modern technology and traditional tracking methods to monitor and protect our rhinos. AI-enabled collars provide valuable data and insights, while telemetry tracking allows our rangers to physically locate and observe the animals in their natural environment.
It’s this balance — between innovation and hands-on experience — that strengthens our protection efforts. Technology alone is not enough. It’s the knowledge, dedication, and skill of our rangers that truly make the difference.
Why Ongoing Training Matters
The bush is constantly changing, and so are the challenges that come with protecting wildlife. Regular training ensures that our team remains prepared, adaptable, and capable of responding effectively in any situation.
Every session builds on their ability to:
- Track and monitor rhinos accurately
- Interpret signs in the environment
- Work together as a coordinated unit
- Respond swiftly when it matters most
